Are You A Stressed Out Workaholic?

By: Robert William Locke

Workaholism is spreading like a nasty disease. Are you a workaholic? I was until I realised I was killing myself for a company that cut human resources at every possible opportunity. My ex boss is a workaholic and as far as I can see, he does not have a very happy existence. I now work three days a week and very glad that I managed to escape !

Mnay of us grew up in families and societies where the Protestant work ethos was very strong. Leisure is idleness, work is a good thing but workaholism is the best ! If work for you is the driving force in your life and you have no time or interest in anything else, then you are probably a woraholic! But this addiction is not easily cured and I think it is rather like a terminal illness.

I had another boss who preached the usual 'home work life balance'. Not only was his approach gentle and kind like when he would say 'Shouldn't you be going home now ??' if we were working too long hours. But he also recommended and practised finding time for his human relationships and that meant finding and dedicating time for partners, loved ones and offspring.

It is a sad fact of life that the society we live in rewards workaholism with promotion and other carrots. But the damage caused by workaholism in the workplace cannot be understimated. The stress caused by this disease spreads to colleagues and is extremely infectious. For example, how many companies have a workplace stress policy ? Not many, I guess. Productivity suffers because the tierder the workers become, the less they produce.

But workaholics are rewarded with faster promotion and higher income. A recent survey found that 38% of people with incomes over $100,000 describe themselves as workaholics compared to only 23% of people who made under $10,000 annually. They seek out the stressful highly paid jobs because they have a need to keep the adrenaline rush going. Relationships with colleagues are fraught, they shun collaboration and they are very poor at delegating.

These workaholics suffer from stress and how ! They suffer from a variety of stress disorders , including anxiety attacks, ulcers, and burnout, as well as depression that can lead to suicide. Workaholics, in fact, can become physically dependent on the adrenaline coursing through their bodies .They are usually taken out by a heart attack or stroke, or collapse with a really catastrophic illness.

The fall out on workaholics' families is considerable. Those who are married to workaholics have higher divorce rates, greater rates of marital estrangement, fewer positive feelings about their marriage and feel less in control of their lives. Of course, the families of workaholics may gain by sharing in their consequently higher incomes but I begin to wonder if this is really a blessing.

The first step in coming to terms with workaholism is recognizing that there is a problem. Are you driven by work? Is your boss driving you too hard and you in turn are being affected by his/her disease ? Time to decide what to do before you become another victim. Your family will thank you for it.
