Cable or DSL?

By: David Wegener

Its a tough choice to choose a broadband Internet provider. Simply picking a technology is difficult when you are not familiar with the terminology. The main services out there are Cable and DSL.

Using the same coaxial cables which bring you television, Cable providers also bring you broadband Internet access.

Even with a Cable modem, you can watch TV and surf the Web at the same time. This is because the modem is an external device that you plug into your computer and cable out let without interfering with your television. Just like DSL broadband, you have instant Internet access by just switching on your computer.

At about 70 times faster than dial-up connections, regular cable Internet service providers have speeds between four to six Mbps. Because the cable TV company provides broadband service, you can save extra money every month by packaging your digital TV, cable Internet, and digital phone together.

Using normal phone lines, DSL service also transmits high-speed data. That is how your local phone company is able to also provide broadband Internet. For civilians and businesses alike, DSL is one of the fastest gowning Internet technologies around.

A typical DSL connection lets customers download data at up to 1.5 Mbps and an upload at 256 Kbps.

Like Cable broadband, DSL offers an always-on connection. But, it dose have a large downside. The further from the provider's central office the lower the connection speeds will be. For many customers this is not an issue because DSL commonly has lower monthly fees.

To summarize, if you only want an always-on connection with a small monthly fee then DSL is a good fit. If you prefer the highest connection speed offered then a cable modem will suite you best.
