Critical Tips for Your Online Marketing Efforts

By: Spencer Pirres

Marketing in the real world and on the web are two completely different things. Following is advice you can use to tweak your internet marketing campaigns.

1. Blog Trick - Blogs are used for many things these days, but one trick is to use them to get a site indexed in Yahoo, Google and MSN. Simply take the pages off your site and enter them on the blog with a link to the corresponding site page. It works.

2. Using Keywords in SEO - Once you have researched your keywords for SEO, consideration needst to be given regarding how to lay them out in your site. Personally, I try to use no more than six per page and often go with just one phrase.

3. SEO Dead Words – When pursuing a search engine optimization campaign, it is important to focus on relevant keywords. That being said, keep in mind there are words that do not count. These words are fillers such as “the”, “a” and so on.

4. SEO Conflict of Interest – When it comes to SEO firms such as ours, it is important to understand that have a conflict of interest. Simply put, they double dip by taking clients competing for the same keywords.

5. PPC vs SEO - The debate between PPC and SEO is a non-starter. If you don't have rankings, market with PPC. If you do, turn off all PPC ads for keywords under which you rank in the top 10.

6. Search Engines That Matter - There are tons of search engines out there, but only three matter - Yahoo, Google and MSN. They control most of the traffic on the web, so don't make the mistake of focusing on other engines.

7. Your Business Domain Name – Using your business name as your domain is a no brainier for most people. Just make sure it is easy to remember and type in. Avoid using it if you have multiple words that end and start with the same letter.

8. Internet Marketing Goals - Before you build a site, you need to know what your goals are. The choices are focusing on a niche or broad area. Niche tends to be better unless you have a lot of time and money.

9. Perfect Internet Business - The perfect online business is whatever you love. It is going to take a lot of work, so figure out your interest and stick with it.

10. Spam versus Email Marketing – Everyone hates spam, but online sites love email marketing. If you are considering it, you need to make sure you are in compliance with the CAN-SPAM Act or risk going to jail.

Opening an online site isn’t so much a business venture as it is a lifestyle. Regardless of how you try to resist it, your site will consume your attention and time. The above advice will hopefully make life a little cushier.
