Don't Throw The Same Old Boring Office Party

By: Aazdak Alisimo

My, hasn't the year gone by fast? We are rolling into the end of the year, which means it is time to throw the annual office holiday party. If you are in charge or involved in putting it on, here is some advice to consider.

Before we discuss festivities, we have to discuss liquid festivities. Yep, I am talking about booze and the office party. Everyone likes a bit of liquid refreshment, but don't over do it. You can ruin the holidays for yourself and your co-workers.

Simply put, moderation is the key. You don't want to say or do something you will really regret. Remember, you boss and supervisors are attending the same party. It is considered a really bad move to say something that gets you fired on the spot.

On to party ideas. Your biggest decision when it comes to the company party will be deciding what type of party you are going to have. Large entities throw big blowouts. Smaller companies, in my opinion, have more fun.

Now is the time to turn the tide on your boss. A great idea for a holiday party is to throw it at his or her house. Why? It feels less like a formal gathering and more like a party of friends. Just make sure you don't do anything stupid.

Ah, but what about food and such? Well, you can go two directions. The first is to have it catered? It can be surprisingly affordable, so make some calls. If money is tight, you can do a potluck party where everyone brings something.

For entertainment, the White Elephant exchange is considered a winner. Everyone brings something from their closet they hate wrapped as a gift and has a value under $30 or so. Gifts are then exchanged and everyone gets a good laugh looking at all the junk.

If you are really looking for something unique, consider holding a non-party office party. One business I was with picked up everyone and took them to an NFL game, buying the tickets and so on. It wasn't a traditional party, but it was definitely a hit.

At the end of the day, I suggest you try something different with your holiday party. Most people are sick and tired of banquet rooms and some form of chicken breast dinner. Been there. Done that. Go for something new. If it fails, at least you tried.
