Exploring Mauritius: Back To Beauty

By: Stu Foster.

A Land Of History

Journals that were written by sailors adrift from Portugal document the discovery of Mauritius in the early 1500's. While the Dutch settled the island in the 1630's, they lost control to the French in 1715. During military campaigns with Britain, France allegedly provided safe passage for pirates who had seized English ships. Eventually, in the early 1800's, France surrendered control of the island to England. As part of the Chagos Archipelago, a group of islands with strategic significance, Mauritius was intended to be used for defence purposes. In the end, that plan was scuttled and in 1968, Mauritius officially gained their independence.

Enjoying The Culture

Today, as a result of its long history of occupation, the island nation enjoys both ethnic and cultural diversity. Their national holidays reflect important events in their past such as the Abolition of Slavery, National Day and the Arrival Of Indentured Labourers. The people of Mauritius celebrate other holidays that reveal a tendency toward fun and reverence. For example, Chinese Spring Festival is observed by lighting fireworks to dispatch evil spirits. Thaipoosam Cavadee is celebrated with sword-climbing and other spectacular sights. Another holiday called Divali turns much of the landscape into a beautiful map of twinkling lights as the island inhabitants celebrate the triumph of good over evil in Hindu lore. Each of these holidays provides an insightful glimpse into the culture of the land and the perspective of the people who live there.

A Perfect Holiday Destination

Mauritius has become the holiday destination of choice among travelers from around the globe. Ironically, the island maintains a quiet solitude that allows visitors to relax and enjoy its natural beauty. The people who live on the island are warm and friendly, happy to share their culture with others. While visiting Mauritius, you can enjoy deep sea fishing, luxurious golf courses and an exciting diversity of mouthwatering cuisine. There are roomy and comfortable hotels, villas and bungalows with all of the amenities of home.

Going on holiday in Mauritius will offer a memorable experience in the slow, relaxing pleasures of tranquil beauty. It's bound to become one of your favorite destinations.
