Furniture Buying and Care Tips

By: Stefan Teek

Unless you live in an RV, you need furniture for your home. Buying furniture is all about understanding what you are getting into. Here are some tips as well as some advice on caring for it.

1. Antique Furniture Authenticity – If you are looking at expensive antiques, make the dealer prove to you he or she knows what they are selling. If they don’t, how do you know if it is real?

2. Trying Out New Mattress – You are going to sleep on the mattress for a long time. Lay down on it in the store just like you would at home. Lay there for 10 minutes or so to make sure it does the trick.

3. Mattress Pricing – The price of a mattress is reflective of only one thing – what they store thinks they can get for it. Price does not mean quality.

4. Antique Furniture Salespeople – A sales persons job is to sell furniture, not necessarily be “accurate.” Don’t rely on anything they tell you about an antique piece.

5. Sunlight on Leather – Do not position your leather so that it sits in direct sunlight during the day. The sun will dry it out and cause it to fade. It will also heat up, which can impact the oils.

6. Slip Sliding Furniture – If you need to move furniture around a house, you can do it easily now. An enterprising company has pads you can place on the bottom of the legs that slide.

7. When to Clean Wood Furniture – If you have wood furniture, you are in for good news. It really only needs to be cleaned when there is a wax build up.

8. Heating Vents and Leather – Do not place your leather furniture around heating vents. They will dry the leather out.

9. Furniture Delivery Times – Once you buy new furniture, you may think it will be delivered in a few days. You might be wrong. Get specific details on how long it will take. Some stores can take weeks and even months.

10. Potpourri and Furniture – As strange as it may sound, potpourri will destroy the finish on your furniture. Don’t even sit the bag on it.

To effectively buy furniture, you need to be able to do some mental imaging. A piece in a store may look great, but will it look good in your home? The answer may be no, so make sure to visualize before buying.
