By: king1234

If you don’t have any form of analytics installed in your website the question is why? How will you know how well your website is working without them? The aim of this article is to look at what analytics gives you and how you can use that to your advantage.

We would usually recommend Google Analytics to our clients, mainly because it is completely free, easy to install and one of the most comprehensive packages available. It might take a little while to figure out how everything works. However when you have done this you will find that your analytics program is vital to increase conversions and your return on investment (ROI). We have put together the main elements of Google Analytics and how they can help you.

Conversions

You can set up your Google Analytics to monitor whether you are making conversions or not. This can either be whether someone buys something on your site, signs up for a newsletter, contacts you, or anything else that you determine. Clearly this is vitally important as it will show you how well your site is working.

You will be able to view your conversion rate through all sorts of traffic sources. So if you have an advert on another site you will be able to see your conversion rate for that advert. This is great for showing you whether your advert is in line with your website. By monitoring this you may be able to make changes to your site and where people join your site in order to increase your conversion rate and thus your profits.

Referring Sites

Through your analytics you can see where your traffic is coming from. If it is a search engine you will also be able to see the keywords that people have used to find you. This will tell you how many people are coming to your site for each of your marketing efforts. If you have an advert and you are getting virtually no traffic from it then you may want to consider whether that advert should be continued.

Also, knowing the keywords that people use to find you will give you an idea on how your SEO efforts are working and whether you have selected the right keywords. For example, is you are getting a lot of traffic for a particular phrase however none of those visitors are converting there could be a problem. This may only be the way that your site is set up, some simple changes could up your conversion rate and ROI.

Landing and Exit Pages

You can view where people arrive at your site, the path they take once they are there and also where they leave. Probably the most important thing to consider is where people are leaving. If they are leaving your site before converting there may be a sticking point. By knowing where most people leave you will be able to change your content to stop people leaving and to increase conversions.

Bounce Rate

This shows you percentage of people that come to your site and leave immediately. If the majority of people arrive at your home page and you have a high bounce rate it may show you that you need to adapt your home page. As it is it might not be pulling people in so you are losing potential clients before they come through the door.

Along the same lines, you can also view the time that people spend on your site. The longer the better. If people think your site is of interest and useful they will stay longer. This will give them more confidence in you and increase the chance of a conversion.

Unique Visitors

This will show you exactly how many people are visiting your site over a certain period. Knowing this makes it easy to know your true conversion rate as well as the quality of your marketing to get people to your site. This is something you need to know in order to understand your site properly.

If you have any problems with your Analytics, take a look at the help section. They probably have a great resource to help you understand exactly how everything works. Remember you cannot get the most out of your website if you do not know how it is working.
