Lobster - a Delicious Treat

By: Isabel Da Silva

When you dine on lobster, you may feel like you are truly eating like a king or queen. Lobster is often considered a delicacy and is a rich and delectable meal.

Before heading out and buying one, you should learn a bit about what exactly a lobster is, how to prepare and serve it and where to buy it from.

A lobster is actually a broadly used term to describe a marine creature known as a crustacean. There are large clawed lobsters and then there are those without claws. Several types of lobsters that do not have claws are spiny lobsters, slipper lobsters, and squat lobsters.

What you usually think of when you think of eating a lobster is the clawed lobster, the reef lobster, and even the small freshwater crawfish. (Crawfish are found in many Creole and southern recipes.)

If you love seafood, you will almost definitely find lobster to be one of the tastiest and most special types. The lobster looks almost regal, sitting on the plate, and you know with a glance it is going to be succulent and bursting with flavor. Lobster is not cheap but you do get what you pay for.

The best prices (and usually the nicest, freshest lobster too) can be found in coastal regions and fishing villages. If you are far from the sea, the price will be higher. On average, a pound of lobster costs between $7.95 and $29.95, depending on the shop and its location.

If you are going to spend that amount of money on a meal, you need to be aware of how to best prepare the lobster. Preparation is easier than you might think. You should purchase one lobster for each person. The fishmonger might offer to steam the lobster for you before you take it away but it is best to take it home live to get the freshest and best taste from it.

When you have grilled, boiled or steamed your lobster, you can choose a simple recipe to use it in. One way is to serve the lobster with a bib, some butter and lemon to squeeze over it.

Simple recipes tend to be the best with lobster because it has its own special taste and too many frills will detract from that. If you have any left over (unlikely but possible nonetheless!) you can take the shell off and make a po'boy sandwich or a lobster salad for the following day.

Remember you don't need to know anything about gourmet food to enjoy a delicious dish like lobster. You need to understand where to buy it, how to prepare it and get hold of a basic lobster recipe. This will definitely result in a meal to remember. If you have never tried it, why not visit your local seafood restaurant and order some? The delectable flavor will make you want to buy and cook some yourself the next time!
