Share The Gift Of A Christmas Story

By: J Gardener

As joyous as the holiday season is, Christmas is also an increasingly expensive occasion for most families, today. Many families, who gather with their relatives at this time of year, are finding that alternative ways of gift-giving can make the financial impact of Christmas more bearable.

Such creativity hearkens back to a simpler time, when the spirit of giving had nothing to do with marketing, and everything to do with the thought and love behind each gift. If you're looking for a simple way to liven up your family gatherings, and save money at the same time, consider the idea of family story-sharing.

It really is simple. Everyone has a favorite song or story-or even a poem-which brings the Christmas season alive. Reading or reciting these traditional holiday tomes is a wonderful gift between family members, and easy to prepare:

As you make your plans for extended family gatherings this holiday season, seek volunteers to share their special Christmas tales. Some draw names or hold a family lottery, to determine who will share stories in any given year.

Most well-known holiday stories and poems are easily found on and downloaded from the internet. If your favorite is "'Twas The Night Before Christmas", for instance, print it out and insert it into a colorful holiday binder-unless you're confident enough to recite it by heart.

Family members who read or recite to the rest should practice a bit, beforehand, either alone or with other immediate family, who can offer constructive and helpful advice, so that the performance itself is entertaining and interesting.

Some family members-especially the youngest-may want to make up their own Christmas tales, to recite. These can become unique family traditions, themselves.

The best time for such an event is probably at the end of the great meal at a holiday gathering. The family has congregated, renewed their ties over a delicious feast, and is ready to share something of themselves, something personal, with each other.

One family member can be designated as the evening's MC, to keep things moving along, to introduce each piece, and offer encouragement to those cousins who may experience sudden shyness, in front of a group. Each story session should be a manageable length-forty-five minutes to an hour, tops. That way, no one gets bored and everyone looks forward to this tradition, at next year's gathering.

Sharing favorite holiday stories and poems and songs with your loved ones can turn into a highlight of each Christmas family gathering.
