TAG Heuer's Magnificent Monaco

By: Debbie Holland

Even the nerdiest dude on the planet will be transformed into the epitome of "cool", once he slips the TAG Heuer Monaco Limited Edition watch on his wrist. Initially, immortalized on the wrist of acting legend, Steve McQueen, in the 1970 screening of the film, Le Mans, the Monaco lit a fire under every mans engine and ignited great interest. It seems that the enthusiasm this watch stirred up has been very slow to die down. This year, TAG Heuer re-released the Monaco, in a vintage version. The Monaco Vintage is in limited production, and only 4,000 of these rare, and sought after pieces will be created. In keeping with the original, unique designing, the new Monaco has that iconic square dial.
The color palette used is black, orange, and blue?this is in tribute to the car McQueen drove in the movie. The famous Porsche-Gulf 917K was the racecar used in the Le Mans movie, and the Gulf logo is referenced on the dial of the collector's edition watch. The Porsche-Gulf 917K was a limited edition, as well, only in production from 1969 to 1973. It was quite a piece of machinery, featuring a 600 horse power engine, which was capable of achieving speeds exceeding 360 mph. This car won the 1970 and 1971 Le Mans, with record time of 5,335 km. That was 40 years ago, and that record still holds, today. The TAG Heuer Monaco Vintage watch was designed as a fitting tribute to that excellence and beauty.
The original Monaco was hand picked by Steve McQueen because it was considered to be the finest drivers' chronograph of its time. This new version is no less fantastic. The square dial has a black background, and features orange and blue accents, as well as the Porsche Gulf logo. This watch carries in it the most powerful and accurate Chronomatic Calibre 11 movement. The original watch movement was a first ever micro rotor mechanical chronograph, with automatic movement. This commanding design doesn't stop at the dial, the look continues, with the black genuine alligator leather strap, complete with orange stitching.
Like I said, before?this watch is as much a symbol of "cool" now, as it was back when Steve McQueen wore it, 40 years ago. This timepiece has a truly timeless appeal, and a dreamy past. So, the next time you start to think yourself as aging?be reminded, you're not old?you're "vintage".
