The Benefits of Sleeping in a Hammock

By: Filipe Onterrio

Sleeping in a hammock offers a truly wonderful experience, with a lot of benefits you hadn’t thought of. Hammocks are incredibly comfortable, whether you want to just lounge away the day or sleep all night. But don’t take our word for it, scientific studies show that hammocks are great for relaxing in the backyard on a lazy afternoon but also for sleeping the night away. Surprisingly, these study results found that those people sleeping in a hammock entered a deeper sleep state more consistently and faster than those that slept on a traditional bed. Deeper sleep states are essential to achieve optimal health since the body has time to restore and regenerate.

Studies have found that people deprived of sleep experience a decrease in their immune system, metabolic functions, and overall health. The body needs this deep sleep to rest and function properly. Unfortunately, millions of people around the world are unable to get a good night’s rest. Not only is their physical health affected, but their mental health as well -- they venture through life tired and grumpy.

With good night’s rest, a person can wake up ready to go -- feeling revived and energized. Unfortunately, too many people turn to the aid of alternative sleep aids, like sleeping pills or aromatherapy to sleep well. Most don’t realize that they could achieve this same affect by using something as simple as a hammock.

Using a hammock to sleep in enhances our night’s rest no matter what kind of stress or even sleep apnea we may suffer from. In fact medical research has shown that sleep improves such conditions as depression, rage, and anxiety. As a comparison, think back to how great you felt when you had a massage or spent time in a Jacuzzi.

When you sleep in a hammock, you will gain that same level of relaxation. When sleeping on a traditional bed, the body’s pressure points are pressed into the mattress, and unfortunately, without much give. However, with a hammock, the weight distribution creates an environment for the body much like floating. With this, no pressure is being placed on the body.

Today, people all over the world are enjoying the benefits created by sleeping in a hammock, simply by moving the traditional bed out and a soft, cozy hammock in. For people suffering from sleeping problems, they are finding that something as easy as a hammock can completely bring them physical, mental, and emotional change. In fact, it is estimated that more than 10 million people now sleep in hammocks.

If you are one of the millions having trouble finding a good night’s sleep, give some serious thought to replacing your bed with a hammock. There are a number of choices, but the Nicaraguan, Brazilian, and Mayan are generally accepted as being the best. They all fit into an average bedroom and provide perfect weight distribution for our tired bodies.
