The Futon Makeover

By: Dolly Willms

For years, futon religiously served solutions to the bedding problem of millions of Americans. It was a standard feature of apartments of young people who decided to be on their own or were students. However, they remained as makeshift, not very presentable couch in the daytime and unwelcoming, not too comfortable bed at night. They never stood for what we call quality. Though, they loyally served the purpose of people who could not afford to pay for a new bed. Futon was uncomfortable but affordable option.

Thanks to some innovative design features and product enhancements, the futon is back and with a passion! No longer relegated to the basement or seedy guest bedroom in the back of the house, these new futons are proud additions in the homes of their owners.

In truth, the new futon (just as with the old futon—at least in theory) is actually a sofa bed. Designed to be a decorative yet functional couch for people to sit upon during the day, the futon is also a tasteful yet fully functional bed by night.

These reinvented futon designs are not just provisional solution for a bedding. Their improved design and enhanced comfort has propelled them into being more than a sofa bed. The improved back support can even rival the most expensive conventional actually has made the futon comeback possible.

One of the most frequent complaints about the old futon design was about their mattresses. These mattresses were made of single layer of cotton that easily became condensed thus, they went flat after being used and offered little support. However, the new futons have multi-layered mattresses with at least one layer of solid foam. These mattresses have the property of bouncing back so they offer more support making the futon more comfortable. Though it is a subtle change yet it has been highly appreciated by the people in support of new futon image.

Besides the improved quality of the mattress, the new futons are made out of sturdy frames. This has made the conversion from bed to couch and back again much simpler. The best futons are made out of solid oak frames and are more appealing to people with traditional décor. The lower end models come with steel frames that are quite well made and almost as attractive as oak frames.

One design flexibility that has added to the flexibility of the futon usage is changeable futon cover. Whenever you want to change your room ambiance all you need to do is to change the futon covers that match your new room design. Changing futon covers weighs much less on the pocket as compared to changing upholstery or replacing the futon itself. Also, the futon can be used at more than one location, depending on the need.

Indeed, the futon has come back with a bang! The design improvements have made the new futon more adaptable to the interior designs of modern homes. The superior quality of mattresses and frames has changed their earlier image of being cheap, inexpensive, beds. The new futons offer various decorating possibilities besides restful sleep.
