Ultrasound Probes New Imaging For A New Era

By: gregory martini

An ultrasound machine (also called a US machine) is a versatile and very common medical device. It uses high-frequency sound waves above the range of human hearing, delivered by probes to diagnose diseases, monitor pregnancy, check for abnormalities, or gauge normal body functions. It can even be used as a therapeutic device.
Ultrasound has applications in both medicine and industrial studies. It is frequently the preferred option to x-ray due to no ionizing radiation being produced, which may be harmful. Also, no diagnostic risks exist when using ultrasound. Sound frequency that is not detectable by human ear is sent to the area under observation. It is then echoed back to the ultrasound transducer, which creates an image of what was found. While a better option in many cases, ultrasound may not always replace x-ray.
A special conducting gel is applied and transducers, or ultrasound probes are placed on the skin to produce ultrasound waves. Physical therapy treatment consists of the applying the ultrasound probe to generate vibrations that heat the tissues and increase blood flow to the affected area. This also alleviates pain and swelling with soft tissue injuries. These areas can become extremely overheated so it is very important to keep the transducer probe moving constantly and limit the treatment time.
Appendicitis and gall bladder disease can be found and diagnosed quickly and easily found using medical ultrasound. Blood testing may actually be slower then ultrasound in cases of appendicitis. X-ray or CT scans are not as accurate and cost more. Gallstones and gall bladder diseases are imaged by ultrasound as part of standard procedure in the United States.
Ultrasound is universally known for charting and diagnosing pregnancy in women. The ultrasound is important during pregnancy, using ultrasound probes to see the female reproductive system which shows up clearly when helped by a full bladder. The ultrasound can show the size and gender of the fetus and also whether the pregnancy is normal or uterine.
Ultrasound technology is also used to image the heart. Usually the ultrasound probe is passed over the heart through the skin of the chest and an image of function and blood flow is recorded, called an echocardiogram. A more precise form of imaging called a TEE or transesophageal echocardiogram is done by passing a special probe down the throat and imaging from the inside. Aneurysms and other conditions can be better detected with this method, but it requires patients to be anesthetized or heavily sedated.
