Use of Magnetic Therapy in Pain Relief

What is Magnetic Therapy?

The idea behind magnetic therapy is that the body has an electro-magnetic field and it is this that responds to the magnets when they are placed on or close to the body. In effect, they will site on the nerve that runs from the source of the pain and the brain and stop the pain reaching the brain. However pain killers will only work for a certain length of time, and depending on the type and strength used this can be anywhere from 4 to 12 hours.

Magnetic Therapy actually works with the cause of the pain rather than just blocking it. As a result if is important to place the magnets on the body as close to the source of the pain as possible. This will enable them to have the maximum effect.

There are various causes of pain. For instance you could have pain caused by an instant trauma, for instance, getting your hand caught in a door. Or you could have long term chronic pain from joint wear and tear or from earlier injuries. However the actual cause of pain is the same for all cases, it is purely pressure being applied to your nerves. This is usually caused by swelling or inflammation in a certain area. It is these swelling of body tissue that will put the pressure on the nerves which in turn will send a pain feeling to the brain. Magnets can be used to reduce inflammation and when this is done the pressure will be relieved and the pain will be gone rather than just blocked.

How do Magnets Reduce Inflammation?

We have already mentioned that placing magnets on the area of pain will draw oxygenated blood to that area. It will also have an effect on damaged cells by causing them to realign their ions to the correct position. This stops the cell damage and begin releasing the excess fluid in the damaged cells. Then over a period of a few days the cells will begin to repair and release the pressure on the nerves.

It is important to mention that magnetic therapy is a safe, non-invasive treatment that can be used along with conventional medicine to speed up the healing process.
