By: Steven Ross

If you are looking for information about disability insurance, then this article is for you. We will discuss some shocking facts you should know about disability insurance, and some options about getting it. This information can be used to decide if disability insurance is right for you.

Suffering a disability as traumatic enough. But when the disability stops you from being able to work, you also become stressed-out because you're not sure how you'll pay the bills. Maybe it's time to think about getting disability insurance.

In 1999, there was an increase in disabilities between persons age 17 to 44, up 400% from 25 years ago. In fact, one out of every seven Americans will become disabled for five years, before they reach the age of 65. These facts were first reported by the disability management sourcebook.

Now, let's compare disability insurance to other insurances. Most people have homeowners insurance, but the odds that you'll actually use it are less than 2%. Everybody is required to carry auto insurance, but only 2.5% of the population will actually have to use it. Finally, compare that to long-term care insurance, where the chances are 40% that if you have a long-term care insurance, you will use it.

This relates to disability insurance, because disabled people represent almost half of those who need long-term care services. Considering these facts, it makes sense to look into getting disability insurance.

Some employers offer short-term and long-term disability insurance. This is one route to take, to get disability insurance.

If you're evaluating a new job, consider if they offer disability insurance as a benefit. If so, get familiar with the coverage involved in their disability insurance plan.

Collecting disability checks from the Social Security administration is your second option. This requires that your disability stop you from working for at least 12 months. You can apply for this by filling out a claim, and sending it in to the Social Security Administration.

You'll either be approved or denied, based on the information provided in your claim. Your chances of approval the pen on if you have the proper documentation, and support of your doctor, regarding your disability.

Your last option is to carry your own disability insurance. It might be a little bit of an investment, but your chances of using it are dramatically higher than most other insurances you carry. Look around and determine different options and pricing, and what's covered on the policy, before purchasing anything.

In closing, use this information to decide if you need disability insurance. Then take the proper action today.
