What is Facebook and Why Should I Care?

By: Sam B. Goldberg

You should care precisely because of what Facebook is: the #1 social activity website in cyberspace and the impetus for Web 3.0 and the semantic web. Only three and a half years old, Facebook has witnessed a sudden explosion in popularity - with the computer biz's biggest players all vying for a piece of the action.

Microsoft, Yahoo! and Google reportedly were locked in a bitter behind-the-scenes battle over buying a prominent piece of Facebook - with Microsoft left standing victorious with a 1.6 percent stake for an astronomical price of two hundred and forty million dollars - shooting up the total Facebook value to roughly fifteen billion.

What was behind paying that big a price for so little a share? The answer lies with the vast majority of Facebook's users, who are the next generation of computer users. Microsoft does not want to lose its claim on them - especially with Google's relentless marketing maneuvers over the past few years dominating the online field. So the company that Bill Gates built has no choice but to show Facebook the money.

Of course, Facebook is also a big winner, as the company continues to grow at an exponential rate. Within the next year, Facebook's workforce will double as it pushes beyond North America and Western Europe and sets its sights on world domination. A new advertising system is also reported to be in Facebook's future, because, according to Facebook chief revenue officer Owen Van Natta, "We were very fortunate to have a lot of folks interested in a partnership with us around advertising."

Why is all the massive marketing buzz suddenly swirling around Facebook? Well, when your numbers show a 50 million active member base, with a growth rate of 200,000 new users a day, that tends to get internet marketers' attention. There's also a prestige factor as Facebook is looked at as a poster boy for Web 3.0 technology - a standalone online operating system that has nothing to do with Windows or Apple. Beyond that, there are the five thousand plus free Facebook applications that make interacting on the site so much fun - at no cost. You can have your own car, post photos, videos and songs you love, send other Friends hugs and tons of other activities contained in all the Facebook tools at your disposal.

Obviously, if heavyweights like Microsoft and Google are fighting over Facebook, they're convinced there's a huge marketing opportunity to be had on this site. That means smaller internet marketing firms and individuals aren't going to want to be left out in the cold. And they don't have to be.

Luckily for the little guy, there is hope. The Stealth Friend Bomber, Facebook Edition is a new, innovative and highly effective Facebook marketing tool. This simple software is totally automated, using a Facebook bot called a Facebook Friend Adder to deliver your message to the Facebook masses via Mass Facebook Friend Pokes, Messages and Requests. With Facebook clearly emerging as the new standard for both technology and the marketing on the internet, the challenge is clear. Savvy marketers need a set of software tricks tailored to reaching the millions of users of the internet's hottest and fastest-growing social network.
